Desde a semana passada, os chineses podem mergulhar num dos mais interessantes livros já escritos sobre os brasileiros. Foi lançada em Pequim, durante as atividades do Ano da Cultura Brasil-China, no último dia 9 de abril, O Povo Brasileiro – A Formação e o Sentido do Brasil, de Darcy Ribeiro (1922-1997), com a presença de autoridades dos dois países, entre elas o embaixador do Brasil no país, Marcos Galvão, e do professor brasileiro Rafael Zerbetto, vencedor do Prêmio de Amizade do Governo Chinês, que classificou a obra como um dos mais importantes trabalhos para entender a formação social brasileira e a identidade cultural do país, fundamentais para aprofundar as relações bilaterais.
Durante o evento, Darcy foi lembrado como um dos intelectuais brasileiros mais influentes do século XX e incluído no livro de heróis nacionais do Brasil pelo presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva em novembro de 2024.
A responsável pela tradução de O Povo Brasileiro, originalmente publicado em 1995, para o chinês foi a professora de comunicação social Yan Qiaorong – que utiliza o nome brasileiro de Sílvia. Segundo ela, o “trabalho meticuloso” de clássicos brasileiros ajudará a realizar a ampliar o diálogo entre acadêmicos brasileiros e chineses e também entre as duas civilizações.
Em seu prefácio à edição chinesa, Yan conta que, ensinando português para os chineses há 21 anos e sendo, atualmente, uma professora de estudos brasileiros, tem se preocupado em imaginar “que tipo de textos esse grande país latino-americano, que pertence ao ‘Sul Global’ como a China, deveria entrar no mundo de língua chinesa”. Um dos seus trabalhos foi, nesse sentido, realizar um levantamento sistemático da bibliografia clássica brasileira.
O Povo Brasileiro era um desses livros. Yan diz que, no trabalho de pesquisa para a tradução, ficou profundamente impressionada com a personalidade, o charme e profundidade acadêmica de Darcy, relembrando o episódio da fuga do hospital, onde tratava de um câncer, para concluir a obra. Ela também ressalta que o processo de negociação dos direitos autorais não foi tranquilo, “e as reviravoltas nas negociações de royalties” e as preocupações de mercado das editoras chinesas deixaram o projeto parado.
O ponto de virada acontece em 2024, quando Yan ganhou o prêmio de “tradutora jovem e de meia-idade excepcional” da Associação de Tradutores da China. No dia da premiação, ela soube que a editora Chaohua, do Escritório de Línguas Estrangeiras da China, estava interessada na edição de livros latino-americanos. Também presente no encontro, um outro professor, Shi Ruojie, teria dito: “Se você só tem uma chance de traduzir clássicos brasileiros na vida, deve ser este”.
Yan afirma também no prefácio que “entender o Brasil sem ler Darcy Ribeiro é como entender a China sem ler [o escritor, poeta e ensaísta] Lu Xun (1881-1936). O gigante intelectual do Brasil no século XX passou sua vida respondendo a duas perguntas fundamentais: O que é o Brasil? Quem são os brasileiros? E sua resposta está condensada nesta obra-prima de seus últimos anos”.
A tradutora avalia que Darcy foi um dos primeiros pensadores “a explorar os princípios da unidade regional em países latino-americanos baseados no respeito à diversidade”. Por isso, suas contribuições acadêmicas teriam promovido “o desenvolvimento de ideias de integração latino-americana”: “Alguns pesquisadores resumem suas contribuições em três aspectos: injetando profundidade histórica na análise da realidade brasileira, dialética da realidade e uma visão ética e política centrada na transformação social. Outros estudiosos apontaram que o pensamento de Ribeiro contém potencial para uma ‘descolonização crítica das ciências sociais’, que influenciou profundamente a construção teórica das ciências sociais no Brasil e até na América Latina”.
O Povo Brasileiro é tratado por Yan como “o resumo final das reflexões de Ribeiro ao longo da vida” sobre como a identidade nacional ‘brasileira’ nasceu, como foi formada e para onde irá. Ela reconta o processo de escrita do livro, que foi escrito pela primeira vez no Uruguai em 1965 (durante o exílio de Darcy, ministro do governo de João Goulart, deposto pelos militares em 1964), ganhou uma segunda edição no Peru em 1972 e foi deixado de lado por Ribeiro, que planejava construir “uma teoria suficiente para explicar a formação dos brasileiros”. “Anos depois”, lembra Yan, “ele revisou com base na edição peruana, que foi finalmente concluída, publicada em 1995 pela Companhia das Letras” – o longo período acabaria por registrar não apenas as turbulências políticas brasileiras, mas também o rigor dos estudos de Ribeiro.
Yan destaca alguns conceitos do livro:
1) a ideia de “novo povo”: “Pedra angular do sistema teórico, esse conceito enfatiza que os brasileiros são uma nova entidade nascida no forno do Novo Mundo através do conflito e fusão das três mães raciais”. Como explica Yan, “não é um simples grupo de raças mistas nem uma simples continuação de qualquer cultura mãe, mas alcançou um ‘novo’ completo em três níveis: transmutação racial, síntese cultural e ruptura de identidade”;
2) “ninguendade”: “Este é o conceito mais original de Ribeiro, capturando com precisão a identidade dos descendentes mestiços na história colonial – nem indígenas, nem europeus, nem africanos, abandonados por todas as fontes e sem pertencimento”. Ribeiro acredita, dialeticamente, segundo Yan, que “é a partir dessa ‘ausência de identidade’ que pode crescer um senso de resistência, permitindo que as pessoas se livrem do dilema identitário no processo de aceitar sua própria ‘brasileiranidade’ e, finalmente, se unirem em uma identidade nacional unificada”;
3) reinterpretação dialética da “mestiçagem”: Ribeiro, continua Yan, “subverte completamente a narrativa calorosa de Freyre sobre a ‘democracia racial’, revelando que o processo de integração se desenrola em relações de poder extremamente desiguais – o encontro entre conquistador e povos originários, o massacre e a assimilação dos povos indígenas, a escravidão e mercantilização dos africanos”. Esse processo, destaca ela, “foi cheio de sangue, violência e trauma, mas foi essa colisão cruel que deu origem a uma nova nação”. Outros conceitos da obra também são explorados neste prefácio de Yan, colaborando para a boa leitura do O Povo Brasileiro.
O texto também trata da atualidade da obra no mundo do Sul Global. Segundo Yan, os estudiosos chineses “não estão mais satisfeitos em usar teorias ocidentais para entender o mundo, mas estão comprometidos em formar uma estrutura subjetiva de conhecimento na aprendizagem mútua das civilizações” – ou seja, estão à procura de interpretações que escapem das visões tradicionais da Europa e dos Estados Unidos. Nesse sentido, a obra de Darcy cumpre o papel de apresentar o Brasil a partir de “uma interpretação interna da nação por intelectuais brasileiros, representando a tradição intelectual do ‘pensamento a partir do Sul’, que ressoa fortemente com os círculos acadêmicos atuais”. “Alguns estudiosos apontaram”, segundo ela, “que as ideias de Ribeiro têm o potencial de ‘descolonizar criticamente as ciências sociais’ e influenciar a geopolítica do conhecimento”.
“Introduzir O Povo Brasileiro no mundo chinês não é apenas uma prática de tradução para mim, é também uma transferência de conhecimento do ‘Sul’ para o ‘Sul’. China e Brasil, dois ‘gigantes do sul’ nos hemisférios leste e ocidental, estão explorando seus próprios caminhos de modernização”, explica ela. “Ribeiro dedicou sua vida a responder a uma questão central: uma civilização unificada pertencente aos ‘brasileiros’ pode crescer nessa terra mestiça? A resposta dele é sempre sim. Essa pergunta e sua resposta podem ressoar no coração dos leitores chineses? Pode fornecer alguma referência para que entendamos e compreendamos as características marcantes da civilização chinesa e pensemos sobre a construção identitária de um país multiétnico? Esse pode ser o significado mais profundo da versão chinesa desta obra.”
