Com Nara Leão, ela gravou o álbum duplo Dez Anos Depois (1971), no primeiro momento em que a cantora-símbolo da bossa nova se rendeu a gravar o repertório da bossa nova. Com a francesa Françoise Hardy, ela compôs e produziu um álbum inteiro, puxado pela canção “La Question” (também em 1971).

Ainda assim, pouco ou nada sabemos sobre quem é ou quem foi a cantora e compositora paulistana Tuca (1944-1978), revelada na era dos festivais da canção e colecionadora de feitos hoje quase totalmente esquecidos pela historiografia musical brasileira.
Um pouco da lacuna vem ser preenchido pelo livro recém-lançado Tuca – A Cantora Lésbica Exilada da História, assinado pelo escritor, pesquisador e compositor Renato Gonçalves. Trata-se de um dos sete títulos iniciais da coleção Vidas Sequestradas, da editora mineira O Sexo da Palavra, que ilumina figuras emblemáticas do chamado universo queer, do Brasil e de fora, sob organização de Cesar Braga-Pinto, doutor em literatura e autor do livro Poses e Posturas – Performances de Gênero e Sexualidade na Literatura Brasileira (1850-1950) (Alameda Editorial, 2023).
Tuca na era dos festivais da canção
Nascida Valeniza Zagni da Silva, numa família de classe média alta, Tuca lançou dois álbuns nos anos 1960 – Meu Eu, de 1965, e Tuca, de 1968 – e se notabilizou primeiro em junho de 1966, ao vencer o II Festival Nacional de Música Popular Brasileira, da TV Excelsior, interpretando, ao lado do percussionista Airto Moreira, a marcha-rancho “Porta-Estandarte”, composição de outros dois futuros proscritos da MPB, Geraldo Vandré e Fernando Lona.
Ainda em 1966, a canção “Porta-Estandarte”, concebida para duas vozes (uma feminina e outra masculina), foi lançada num compacto, mas cantada por Tuca com o próprio Vandré. Em outubro do mesmo ano, os dois se tornaram parceiros em “O Cavaleiro“, defendida por ela e segunda colocada do I Festival Internacional da Canção, então na TV Rio (e dali em diante na nascente Globo). A canção vencedora, “Saveiros”, defendida por Nana Caymmi, era a única entre as três primeiras colocadas a não ter uma mulher entre seus autores (“Dia das Rosas”, interpretada por Maysa, tinha co-autoria de Maria Helena Toledo).
Antes mesmo da visibilidade nos festivais Tuca havia nascido artisticamente sob o signo da composição, uma atividade largamente interditada às mulheres pela indústria fonográfica de então. Em 1965, paralelamente ao lançamento do LP Meu Eu, suas composições eram gravadas pelas vozes (femininas) de Alaíde Costa, Ana Lúcia e Thelma Soares. Em Meu Eu, Tuca se equilibrava entre a música popular e a erudição, por exemplo em “A Estrada” (assinada por Tuca e Rita Moreira), sob belíssimo arranjo de Chiquinho Morais, futuro maestro de um certo Roberto Carlos.
A condição homossexual não foi algo que tivesse vindo à tona publicamente na existência artística de Tuca até ela se exilar na Europa, no início de 1969, no bojo da instalação do AI-5. “Quanto ao fato de ter sido uma mulher lésbica, Tuca não viveu um período em que houvesse instituições que pudessem reconhecer esse traço”, afirma Renato Gonçalves em seu livro.
Ainda assim, já em 1965 Tuca compôs (com dois parceiros masculinos) e cantou uma música chamada “Medieval”, com versos como “minha amada está dormindo/ enquanto eu fico a penar/ minha vida está tão triste/ com o amor que não me dás/ sofro tanto, amada minha/ se soubesses me amarias”. O tom, mais próximo da melancolia de Maysa e Dolores Duran que da juventude de Elis Regina ou Wanderléa, deixava a voz de Tuca boiando no ar, aparentemente inadequada ao passado recente, ao presente ou ao futuro.
O título dessa canção, “Medieval”, alegorizava uma característica onipresente na produção musical de Tuca nos anos 1960, povoada por títulos como “Homem de Verdade” (1965), “O Cavaleiro” (1966), “O Cavaleiro e a Virgem”, “O Cavaleiro das Mãos Tão Frias”, “Paixão, Segundo o Amor” (1968), de tratamentos que apontavam talvez para um passado disrante, imemorial. No contrafluxo, um discreto pendor vanguardista aflorava na última faixa do Tuca de 1968, “Abstrato N° 1 (Descrição de um Quadro da Bienal)“, entre o balanço bossa nova e a erudição de uma Jocy de Oliveira.
Outra vertente do trabalho de Tuca na linha de partida, não explicitada nas diversas canções de festival, era a aproximação com a religiosidade afro-brasileira, em sintonia com os chamados afro-sambas compostos desde 1963 por Baden Powell e Vinicius de Moraes. Tuca compôs os pontos de candomblé “Yemanjá” e “Xangô“, ambos gravados em 1965 no LP Meu Eu e simultaneamente em leituras lancinantes pela cantora negra Thelma Soares, outra figura apagada dos registros da fase televisiva da MPB, no bravo LP Thelma.
A obra de Tuca sobrevive hoje à custa de admiradores como os que conduzem sua página no Facebook, mas não deixou de povoar os escritos de estudiosos e especialistas, ao menos quanto à sua fase festivaleira. Em seu referencial livro A Era dos Festivais – Uma Parábola (Editora 34, 2003), Zuza Homem de Mello cita a artista 13 vezes, sem no entanto contornar o segundo estigma que contribuiu para cancelá-la, classificando-a por exemplo como “a gordota Tuca”. Como mostra o trabalho de Renato Gonçalves, Tuca praticamente inexistia na imprensa de sua época (e na posterior) sem estar colada a alguma referência, invariavelmente jocosa, a seu sobrepeso.
Lançado em 1968 pela multinacional Philips, o segundo LP de Tuca coincidiu com o momento de chegada do executivo André Midani à casa fonográfica, para cumprir a missão de dizimar grande parte do inflado elenco contratado, o que acabaria por dar passagem e alto-falante privilegiado à MPB de extração tropicalista que florescia desde o Festival de Record de 1967. Nesse segundo LP, indícios lésbicos poderiam ser caçados, se muito, na regravação de “Curare”, de Bororó (lançada por Orlando Silva em 1940), de versos como “você tem boniteza e a natureza foi quem agiu/ com esses óio de índia, curare no corpo que é bem Brasil/ (…) nega neguinha/ tudo tudinho/ meu amorzinho/ com essa boquinha vermelhinha rasgadinha/ que tem veneno como o quê”.
Tuca em Oropa, França e Itália
Seja pelo extermínio do elenco da Philips, pelo auto-exílio pós-AI-5 ou por uma combinação dos dois fatores, a carreira de Tuca como cantora e compositora brasileira foi interrompida no apagar de luzes de 1968, a partir de quando ela iniciaria uma errática carreira internacional.
Três compactos simples autorais de Tuca foram lançados em 1970 pelas filiais da Philips na França e na Itália, contendo dois novos afro-sambas e duas composições convertidas aos respectivos idiomas, em ambiências e interpretações delicadas de chanson francesa (ou italiana). Sob abordagem roqueira, o primeiro compacto estrangeiro reuniu um novo ponto para Xangô (novamente batizado simplesmente “Xangô“) e outro para Oxóssi (“Umbanda”), esse incorporando fragmentos recolhidos da tradição afro-religiosa, como “bandeira branca enfiada em pau forte/ trago no peito a estrela do norte”, reaproveitado dois anos depois por Caetano Veloso em “Triste Bahia”, de seu antológico álbum anglo-baiano Transa.
Até então oscilante entre a bossa nova e a canção de protesto, Tuca procurou nos compactos europeus se identificar – ao menos em parte – com a veia tropicalista, como mostra uma ambígua declaração da artista à época, recuperada por Renato Gonçalves: “Caetano, Gil e eu estamos fazendo uma linguagem para falar com uma juventude internacional. Se estamos dentro de um festival com todos aqueles barulhos de guitarra e chega um brasileiro e canta ‘olha que coisa mais linda…’, não dá”. Ainda não era hora de Tuca se alistar aos “barulhos de guitarra” introduzidos pelos tropicalistas à cultura de festival.
Segundo sublinha Renato Gonçalves, as capas trop-coloridas de dois dos compactos internacionais foram ilustradas por fotos de Tuca portando alimentos em suas mãos, como se estivesse prestes a abocanhá-los, formando imagens hoje imediatamente classificáveis como grosseiramente preconceituosas e gordofóbicas. As canções ali reunidas, em francês e em italiano, nada tinham a ver com temas gastronômicos, fome ou qualquer coisa do gênero.
Estabelecida nesse período em Paris, Tuca encontrou a conterrânea também auto-exilada Nara Leão e foi apresentada à francesa Françoise Hardy, produzindo para ambas trabalhos em nada semelhantes ao que ela fizera até então. Para a primeira, responsabilizou-se pela direção musical, pelos arranjos e pelos violões do comemorativo Dez Anos Depois, com 24 clássicos de bossa nova nunca antes gravados por Nara. Gravadas em Paris somente em voz e violão, as canções foram enviadas para o Brasil aos cuidados de Roberto Menescal, compositor da geração bossa nova e então diretor artístico da mesma Philips que mantinha Nara sob contrato. À revelia, Menescal modificou em parte o trabalho de Nara com Tuca.
“Insatisfeito, o produtor não havia gostado da proposta inicial, a enxuta formação voz e violão, reclamando ainda das harmonias de Tuca, que supostamente estariam erradas, e decidiu acrescentar arranjos de orquestração em algumas de suas faixas. A adição de novos elementos inicialmente contrariou Nara Leão, que gostaria de seguir com uma sonoridade minimalista, mas depois foi acatada pela cantora”, escreve Renato Gonçalves. Menescal, ele ressalta, é creditado como produtor único do álbum duplo e não citará Tuca em suas declarações futuras sobre Dez Anos Depois. A Tuca, restou o difuso e acanhado crédito de “participação especial”.
O mesmo não se repetiria com o introspectivo LP Francoise Hardy. A suave e melancólica cantora e compositora francesa havia passado a prestar atenção à música brasileira a partir de 1968, ao participar do III Festival Internacional da Canção, aquele no qual “Sabiá“, de Tom Jobim e Chico Buarque, venceu “Pra Não Dizer Que Não Falei das Flores”, de Vandré, e levou também o prêmio principal da fase internacional. Em seu LP daquele ano, Francoise Hardy gravou “La Mésange“, versão em francês de “Sabiá”.
O álbum de 1971 de Françoise foi dividido entre sete canções de Tuca com letras traduzidas por versionistas franceses, três parcerias Tuca-Hardy (“La Question”, “Mer” e “Oui, Je Dis Adieu”), uma composição solitária de Françoise e uma versão da francesa para “A Transa” (1970), do uruguaio-carioca Taiguara. Tuca era, portanto, co-autora de dez das 12 faixas do álbum. Além de compositora, ela aparece generosamente creditada como diretora artística, violonista e arranjadora. Na contracapa, duas fotos a flagram ao lado de Hardy.
“La Question” foi inserida como tema da personagem de Sonia Braga na trilha sonora da popular novela global Selva de Pedra (1972), mas Renato Gonçalves registra o chocante sumiço de Tuca da edição nacional do álbum de Françoise Hardy: “Quando o disco foi editado no Brasil em 1972, com outra capa e contracapa, a gravadora excluiu os créditos de Tuca nos encartes, uma escolha que, propositalmente ou não, boicotou a artista. As fotos com Tuca também não entraram”.
Predominantemente feminino, o Francoise Hardy de 1971 orbitou em torno do formato voz e violão, marcou uma virada para a cantora e compositora até então frugal e foi mal recebido pela crítica. Mesmo assim, segundo aponta Renato Gonçalves, Francoise Hardy “até os seus últimos anos de vida o considerou como o melhor trabalho de sua carreira discográfica”. “Nas palavras da cantora, ter gravado esse disco foi como ‘ter subido um degrau'”, escreve. O autor deixa um questionamento: “Diante do universo da produção musical, dominado por homens, será coincidência que Françoise Hardy só foi conseguir fazer um disco com autonomia quando foi dirigida por uma outra musicista mulher?”.
O autor retoma referências a Tuca nos livros de memórias de Hardy, em geral elogiosas, mas como de praxe descambando para referências nada lisonjeiras ao aspecto físico da brasileira. “O contraste entre seu físico e a delicadeza de suas melodias era impressionante. Foi amor à primeira vista. Ela possuía um carisma avassalador, como o de Marlon Brando“, escreve Françoise Hardy em um de seus livros.
Tuca, vampira?
Na parte final de A Cantora Lésbica Exilada da História, Renato Gonçalves aborda a relação amorosa de Tuca com a artista plástica brasileira Jeannette Prioli, também radicada em Paris – e hoje colaboradora da página de Tuca no Facebook, inclusive com farto material fotográfico inédito. Esse encontro culminaria no terceiro e derradeiro álbum de Tuca, o gótico, roqueiro e anárquico Drácula I Love You, concebido na Europa, gravado num castelo francês do século XVIII com músicos franceses e ingleses e só lançado em 1974, pela gravadora da Globo, a Som Livre, após a volta de Tuca para o Brasil. “É experimental, com base eletrônica, mas não perde, em nenhum momento, a raiz brasileira. Cuíca com sintetizador é sensacional”, definiu-o a artista à epoca, para O Globo.
Na visão de Renato Gonçalves, o vampiresco Drácula I Love You “tem o homoerotismo feminino como subtexto do começo ao fim”, em faixas como “Girl“, “Pra Você com Amor” (parcerias de Tuca com Jeannette, que é creditada no álbum apenas como “Prioli”) e “O Sorvete” (assinada por Prioli e mais um artista secreto da música brasileira, Mário de Castro, creditado na capa como “participação especial”).
O projeto original de capa, baseado na pintura Reflexion, de Jeannette, não foi aprovado pela Som Livre, e uma sessão de fotos foi encomendada à fotógrafa Marisa Alvarez Lima. O livro relata as idas e vindas das letras de “Drácula I Love You”, “Pra Você com Amor” e “O Sorvete” (com metáforas sobre sexo oral feminino) junto à censura da ditadura.
O julgamento dos censores à obra de Tuca, anexado ao livro, incorporava termos como “mensagens aflorando o sexo de forma bastante torpe”, “mensagens não edificantes e deseducativas”, “linguagem rasteira, dilacerante, dúbia e agressiva”, “aspectos de ferocidade e antropofagia”, “ilações grosseiras e deturpadas”, “comparação grotesca e irreverente”… O parecer final, que garantiu a liberação das canções após quatro meses de indefinição, foi assinado por três censoras do sexo feminino.
Instância seguinte de julgamento, a crítica musical da época tampouco foi gentil com Tuca. Segundo O Globo, a artista ressurgia “vestindo uma roupagem sofisticada, bem diferente da gorda Tuca e seu violão, à qual estávamos habituados”. O crítico, não nomeado no livro de Renato Gonçalves, desferia um golpe final eivado de fel: “Na próxima, recomenda-se um colar de alhos para repelir a sede draconiana e que pode ser comido depois, para efeitos de emagrecimento”. E Renato acrescenta: “Mesmo jornalistas e críticos sérios, como Zuza Homem de Mello e Nelson Motta, não hesitaram em se referir à artista com a pejorativa alcunha de gorda”.
Drácula I Love You foi fagocitado, num processo de entropia composta por fatores múltiplos, internos e (sobretudo) externos: alguma indefinição estética, censura, desinteresse comercial, incompreensão pela guinada artística de Tuca, lesbofobia, gordofobia… A ópera-rock lésbica da artista teve destino oposto ao da contraparte masculina, os Secos & Molhados de Ney Matogrosso, o maior sucesso pop da música brasileira naquele mesmo intervalo 1973-1974.
Tuca não publicou mais nenhuma música desde a rejeição e repulsa civil-militar brasileira a Drácula I Love You até a sua morte, quatro anos mais tarde, aos 33 anos, em circunstâncias nunca totalmente desvendadas e, segundo a voz corrente na imprensa sensacionalista da época, causada por “um regime severo ao qual ela havia se submetido”, como tateia Renato. Segundo ele levanta, o noticiário policial da época falou em jejum de 15 dias, macrobiótica, guru espiritual, “regime suicida”, meditação transcendental e tudo mais que não mencionasse condições psicológicas ou qualquer responsabilidade dos meios de comunicação por mais de uma década de gordofobia e lesbofobia arremessadas contra Tuca. Sua história justifica plenamente o nome contundente da coleção Vidas Sequestradas.
Outras vidas sequestradas
A série da editora O Sexo da Palavra sai do prelo inicialmente com sete títulos e a meta de “fazer uma versão moderna e queer da coleção Encanto Radical, da editora Brasiliense dos anos 1980”, nas palavras do organizador Cesar Braga-Pinto. “O objetivo é iluminar aspectos menos conhecidos de figuras já reconhecidas e revelar outras esquecidas e marginalizadas, tudo do ponto de vista das sexualidades dissidentes, levando em conta gênero, raça etc.”, ele complementa, lembrando que entre os autores da coleção dos 1980 estavam Paulo Leminski, Antônio Bivar, Boris Schnaiderman, Marilene Felinto e Inácio Araújo.
Classificados como “ensaios introdutórios” sobre personagens históricos das artes, da literatura e do ativismo político, os primeiros livros da série abordam figuras de relevo como o escritor Raul Pompeia (O Desejo Líquido, de Raul Antelo), o cineasta Pier Paolo Pasolini (Amado e Odiado, escrito por Luiz Nazario), o encenador teatral Zé Celso Martinez Corrêa (O Corifeu da Rua Jaceguai, por Marcio Aquiles) e o crítico cinematográfico Jean-Claude Bernardet (Viajante do Corpo, de Sabina Anzuartegui). A Desmesura de uma Vida Meteórica, de Renata Pimentel, reaviva a história do desenhista, cartunista, dramaturgo e ator argentino radicado na França Copi (1939-1987).
Um sétimo título lança luz sobre O Imitador do Belo Sexo, de Sancler Ebert, apresenta o transformista Darwin (1891-1963), um artista espanhol que, radicado no Brasil, percorreu cineteatros de todo o país em shows de imitação de personalidades femininas variadas, fez grande sucesso e chegou a ser classificado como “a maior celebridade dos últimos tempos”. Darwin, como Tuca, é outra figura que foi esmaecida pelo tempo e pelo apagamento, por motivos que muitos podem adivinhar, mas poucos querem realmente remexer.
Os sete primeiros livros terão um lançamento oficial na Flip, que acontece em Paraty entre os dias 22 e 26 de julho, e podem ser adquiridos pelo site da editora O Sexo da Palavra.
