Dessa vez, avisou, para mostrar como a privação da água e da terra contribuiu decisivamente para perpetuar uma situação de dominação e expurgo no sertão do Nordeste. “Eu sou definido por isso, pela condição de nordestino”, afirmava. Também planejava transferir seu magnífico acervo cinematográfico, reunido ao longo de mais de meio século de diligente apreço pela História, para uma instituição pública. Chegou a obter um compromisso público da secretária do Audiovisual do Ministério da Cultura, Joelma Gonzaga. “Somente quando eu me livrar disso aqui é que posso seguir adiante”, declarou, em depoimento recente ao Canal Brasil. Não era uma coleção qualquer de quinquilharias: reúne cerca de 5 mil itens e conta com o roteiro de um filme de Ariano Suassuana, cartas do lendário Mario Peixoto pedindo financiamento (Peixoto morreu antes de a carta chegar aos destinatários), a Moviola com que Glauber Rocha montou filmes, entre outras coisas.
Morto ontem em Brasília, Vladimir Carvalho não foi apenas um cineasta, escultor e pintor. Foi um artista que nasceu dentro do seu objeto de estudo, o Nordeste, e se fundiu a ele durante sua obra. Era mais do que agradável dividir com ele uma mesa de café num festival de cinema, partilhar sua inteligência vívida e antenada, os festivais aos quais ele sempre comparecia, e ouvir como discorria, sem vaidade ou afetação, sobre os mitos da cultura brasileira, sobre o conterrâneo Sivuca ou a diplomacia de Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães – todos seus amigos ou camaradas. Comunista dos quatro costados, viveu escondido com o nome de Zé dos Santos durante a ditadura militar (por conta do hábito de esculpir madeira) e compreendeu a profundidade da literatura regional com rara generosidade, elemento que alimenta seu filme O Engenho de Zé Lins (2007). Para dar conta da personalidade de José Lins do Rego, foi viver no Rio de Janeiro apenas para poder retratar esse duplo pertencimento brasileiro.
O primeiro filme que conta com o nome de Vladimir nos créditos é um clássico, Aruanda, longa-metragem de 1960 dirigido por Linduarte Noronha sobre o cotidiano dos quilombolas da Serra do Talhado, no município de Santa Luzia, no qual Vladimir é creditado como assistente de direção. Seu primeiro curta documental, de 1968, foi Os Romeiros da Guia, sobre a peregrinação dos fiéis ao santuário de Lucena. De assistente a coprodutor de Eduardo Coutinho em Cabra Marcado para Morrer (1984) foi um pulo, e Coutinho foi um diretor do qual Vladimir se tornou parceiro e colaborador. Três longas-metragens dirigidos por Vladimir (O País de São Saruê, Giocondo Dias – Ilustre Clandestino e Rock Brasília – Era de Ouro) estão entre alguns dos mais importantes da filmografia nacional. O País de São Saruê, que foi vetado pela censura militar e arrancado do Festival de Brasília de 1971, é do início da década de 70 e aborda as secas na região de Rio do Peixe, na Paraíba, com imagens e depoimentos de garimpeiros locais. O filme tem como fio condutor um poema de Jomar Moraes e é narrado pelo dramaturgo Paulo Pontes. foi censurado e retirado do Festival de Brasília, no qual seria projetado, em 1971. São Saruê figura na lista dos 100 maiores documentários nacionais, segundo a Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Cinema (Abracine).
Giocondo Dias – Ilustre Clandestino trata da trajetória política e pessoal do cabo Giocondo Dias, líder comunista que substituiu Luiz Carlos Prestes na Secretaria-Geral do PCB e lutou contra a ditadura A política estava sempre no radar, como quando filmou O Evangelho Segundo Teotônio (1984). Rock Brasília – Era de Ouro mostra a eclosão do rock em Brasília nos anos 80, cena que gestou bandas como Legião Urbana e Plebe Rude. O filme é um documento precioso sobre a música e aquele período, com imagens de arquivo inéditas e depoimentos de Caetano Veloso, Renato Russo, Dado Villa-Lobos, Marcelo Bonfá, Dinho Ouro Preto e Herbert Vianna, João Barone e Bi Ribeiro, do Paralamas do Sucesso.
Vladimir Carvalho dirigiu mais de 20 filmes durante seus 50 anos de carreira no cinema e integrou as hostes do Cinema Novo, o que desautorizava a modéstia com que se apresentava aos desconhecidos – por trás do sorriso largo, os gestos moderados e pacientes, o desapreço pela hostilidade, estava um dos grandes mestres do cinema brasileiro (irmão de outra figura lendária, Walter Carvalho). “Os temas do Brasil estão aí para serem abordados, não há assunto interditado à verdade”, afirmou, em 2019. Professor da Universidade de Brasília por cerca de 40 anos, trabalhou também como repórter nos anos 1960 e entrevistou Pixinguinha, João da Baiana e Donga, e a multiculturalidade de seu olhar ficou registrada nos seus filmes. Mas a amplidão da sua alma o levou ainda mais longe, ao coração dos amigos.
