Há 5 anos, o professor José Nunes, de Brasília, me procurou para participar do seu projeto COMO EU ESCREVO, que consistia em escritores de todo o País respondendo a perguntas sobre o ofício de escrever. Respondi às questões, foi publicado, mas nem eu mesmo lembrava o que tinha respondido. O projeto acabou, não tem mais site localizável na internet, mas, limpando minha caixa postal, localizei por acaso minhas respostas em um e-mail antigo ao professor Nunes. Considerei interessante republicar aqui, talvez ainda contenham algum grau de reflexão.

1. Como você começa o seu dia? Você tem uma rotina matinal?

Acordo muito cedo, 5h30, 6h. Solto o cão, alimento o gato, penso no que os filhos irão comer no café da manhã. Posso então, eventualmente, fazer bolinhos de chuva ou torradas ou ir à padaria. Se estiver com remorso por alguma coisa desaconselhável que fiz ou disse no dia anterior, sou capaz de embaralhar todas essas coisas: fazer bolinho de gato, prender os filhos no quintal, jogar água quente no cão. Minha consciência me esfola. Por fim, antes que todos acordem, leio algo que retiro aleatoriamente das estantes. Quase sempre é uma colheita frutífera. Outro dia, recolhi isso: “Os chineses veem as horas nos olhos dos gatos” (Charles Baudelaire, em Spleen).

2. Em que hora do dia você sente que trabalha melhor? Você tem algum ritual de preparação para a escrita?

Escrevo nos interstícios das outras atividades – lavar louça, fazer nhoque, pentear os filhos, consertar vazamento de pia. Minha escrita sempre foi de baixa classe média, como eu mesmo. Converso com os vizinhos conforme caminho até a padaria, eles têm rotinas que conheço, é possível medir o pulso da cidade nessas conversas e sobretudo no diagnóstico da quebra das rotinas, quando acontecem. Costumo me desencaminhar facilmente; muitas vezes preparo tudo para escrever, empilho cadernos de anotações, livros de referência, biscoitos, uma taça de vinho. No fim, acabo deixando tudo de lado porque avistei algo de grande estridência no Diário Oficial da União, que leio todo dia por hábito. E, então, a partir daí, redijo uma reportagem. O jornalismo me rouba literatura todos os dias, assim como também paga resgate.

3. Você escreve um pouco todos os dias ou em períodos concentrados? Você tem uma meta de escrita diária?

Escrevo todos os dias que não são tolhidos por um cálculo renal ou um aniversário de filho. Mas nem sempre escrevo pelos mesmos motivos. Muitas vezes, são textos que nunca serão lidos, eu acredito que não exista demanda para eles. Já as metas variam conforme os contratos e os deadlines: houve tempo em que estabeleci como meta escrever 20 páginas por dia, por desespero. Hoje, me contento com  duas, com as quais posso me relacionar mais francamente, com maior honestidade. É evidente que há aqueles textos do tipo pomba-gira, que baixam instantaneamente já com música e coreografia incluídas e você não consegue deixá-los de lado sem antes concluir – é um fenômeno raro, mas já foi testemunhado por descrentes muito graduados.

4. Como é o seu processo de escrita? Uma vez que você compilou notas suficientes, é difícil começar? Como você se move da pesquisa para a escrita?

Nunca é difícil. Por um motivo talvez prosaico (na minha opinião): eu estudei datilografia. Os que também fizeram talvez me compreendam melhor. A escrita feita no arco do tempo analógico exigia três coisas: força nos tendões, uma agilidade sobrenatural e um senso de espacialidade interiorizado (como preconizou Santo Agostinho). Explico. O senso de espacialidade funciona assim: o texto inteiro precisa estar formulado na minha cabeça para  que eu o assuma como meu. Eu não sou dependente do processo de colagem, de montagem, embora consiga fazê-lo sem problemas. Quando eu era repórter de jornal no tempo das máquinas de escrever, eu chegava com o texto pronto na cabeça e o datilografava o mais rápido possível nas laudas para economizar tempo nos fechamentos apertados. Também errava muito pouco na hora de digitar, o que ajudava na negociação de edição. Eram artimanhas de sobrevivência que permaneceram em mim de um jeito meio psicótico, mas que funcionam em relação à minha literatura.

5. Como você lida com as travas da escrita, como a procrastinação, o medo de não corresponder às expectativas e a ansiedade de trabalhar em projetos longos?

Entro com as travas da chuteira na garganta da trava da escrita. Não há como não sair um texto, eu não aceito. O medo de falhar, em geral, é um receio que aflige com maior potência os perfeccionistas, e eu não sou exatamente perfeccionista. Aprendi a administrar um porcentual mínimo de falhas sem que me tornasse displicente ou negligente. O maior demônio não é a expectativa dos outros, mas a sua própria, então quando você equilibra isso, desenvolve convicção e coragem (“A arquitetura não é importante, a vida é importante”, dizia Oscar Niemeyer), a literatura se desenrola com mais naturalidade, as artérias ficam desobstruídas para o sangue correr livre.

Já a procrastinação, para não deixar angustiado, é uma arte que precisa ser associada ao blefe, ao auto-engano, senão não funciona. “Amanhã eu trabalharei até a madrugada”. Ou: “Consigo fazer tudo no sábado de manhã”. É tudo mentira, mas precisa parecer que é verdade porque ajuda a enganar os cobradores.

O projeto mais longo para mim, até hoje, é o do cinema, e ainda não aprendi a conviver com ele: um pé de abacate pode crescer mais rápido do que um filme fica pronto, então eu creio que vou acatar o ato do abacateiro e relaxar quanto ao resto.

6. Quantas vezes você revisa seus textos antes de sentir que eles estão prontos? Você mostra seus trabalhos para outras pessoas antes de publicá-los?

Reviso até a exaustão, mas não com olhos tecnocráticos. Reviso para saber se são novos, se contém novidade e frescor. Depois entra a negociação técnica, que sempre envolve mais pessoas. É importante aprender a confiar nas outras pessoas. Mas isso após o texto pronto. Quando em desenvolvimento, jamais os mostro a alguém. Creio que isso acontece por dois motivos: o maior é a superstição, o obscurantismo, a coisa que não se explica; em segundo, porque não quero mudar de rumo antes de saber se eu quero mudar de rumo. Em geral, a gente procura opiniões externas ao nosso texto para obter algum toque de razoabilidade, apaziguamento, um consenso prévio. Tenho medo disso, pode-se matar alguma pequena insurreição desse jeito.

7. Como é sua relação com a tecnologia? Você escreve seus primeiros rascunhos à mão ou no computador?

Amo a tecnologia. Mas tenho equipamentos obsoletos, não sou um consumidor admirável das novidades.

Escrevo à mão e também no laptop. Não uso o celular para escrever porque me castiga a tendinite, mas no laptop uso abrir muitas páginas no Google Drive para armazenar ideias, depois eu as reúno e vou trabalhando.

8. De onde vêm suas ideias? Há um conjunto de hábitos que você cultiva para se manter criativo?

A maior parte de minhas ideias provém de fragmentos de jornais e revistas velhos. Recortes, arquivos digitais, hemerotecas. Mas essas ideias, em geral, são apenas exercícios. Outro dia li uma reportagem sobre um adivinho de subúrbio do Rio de Janeiro dos anos 1950 que fez muitas previsões acertadas na vizinhança, e muitas delas continham coisas terríveis. Isso fez com que os clientes e vizinhos se revoltassem, se reunissem e decidissem matar o adivinho a pauladas. Achei isso fascinante, um conto pronto e perdido no tempo. Tipo Assassinato no Orient Express: ao final, toda a vizinhança foi presa, todos eram culpados. Estava nas páginas policiais do jornal O Globo. Gosto da literatura que tem essa perspectiva: atua no tecido mais realista da existência cotidiana, e ainda assim projeta em si toda a reflexão filosófica de anos de experiência do pensamento, da natureza humana.

9. O que você acha que mudou no seu processo de escrita ao longo dos anos? O que você diria a si mesmo se pudesse voltar à escrita de seus primeiros textos?

Tudo mudou todo o tempo. Aprendi a respeitar os relatos anômalos que antes eu desprezava porque queria separar para mim apenas o que fazia sentido ou tinha impacto. Aprendi com o tempo a respeitar as falas dos entrevistados que antes eu julgava aborrecidas porque já sabia o seu final, e não conseguia me concentrar no trajeto dela, no percurso, na grandeza da edificação dos relatos. Aprendi a gostar de coisas sem propósito, como placas de sinalização cortadas pela metade e discursos interrompidos. Paradoxalmente, se eu pudesse voltar ao momento em que escrevia meus primeiros textos, eu diria: “Me empresta um pouco dessa falta de noção?”. Me tornei responsável demais, quero voltar a pisar na bola sem crise de consciência.

10. Que projeto você gostaria de fazer, mas ainda não começou? Que livro você gostaria de ler e ele ainda não existe?

Gostaria de escrever o final de histórias que narrei como jornalista há muito tempo e nunca mais soube como prosseguiram, ou terminaram. Gostaria também de escrever a biografia de um animal, um cavalo que tivesse passado por muitos donos, de fazendeiros a carroceiros de rua, um cão que tivesse sobrevivido a uma picada de jararaca após agonizar por três dias. Algo que arranhasse a beleza da história Lily e o Caçador, da dupla italiana Berardi e Milazzo.

Gostaria de ler um livro escrito por uma das 7 milhões de pessoas que vivem do auxílio emergencial desde março de 2020 – não uma história escrita por alguém que  observa, mas por alguém que vive a gestão de uma dúzia de ovos para um mês, um quilo de feijão que não pode azedar, uma panela de arroz que vira bolinho que vira grude.
