Foi em 1979, em São Jorge do Patrocínio, um lugar que ainda não tinha status de
município e aonde não chegava onda de rádio. A TV só pegava bem num único canal e
não havia asfalto em lugar nenhum àquela altura.
No meio da cidade (que era um quadrilátero de umas 8 quadras, cercado de
plantações de café), tinha uma torre. Nessa torre, havia quatro alto-falantes gigantes,
um em cada face da torre, e uma cabine logo abaixo. Dentro da cabine, enfronhava-se
uma espécie de proto-radialista – um profissional anterior ao radialista. Os alto-falantes
cobriam uma área de, mais ou menos, um quilômetro quadrado.
O dia todo, o locutor castigava os alto-falantes falando das promoções nos postos de
gasolina, no mercado, na loja de autopeças. E tocavam música. A mais tocada era It’s
a Heartache, com a Bonnie Tyler. Tocava pelo menos umas 5 vezes por dia. Era uma
estação de rádio compulsória.
Eu era menino e fazia cobranças de bicicleta pela cidade e aprendia o ofício de auxiliar
de contabilidade. Transcrevia notas fiscais à mão para os livros-caixa, e tinha um calo
no dedão de tanto escrever. Foi nessa época que forjei a assinatura que uso até hoje.
Tive tempo e tinta para praticar. Mandei também fazer um carimbo com o meu nome.

A cantora galesa Bonnie Tyler, voz imaculadamente rouca da minha pré-adolescência, morreu nessa quarta-feira no Faro, em Portugal. Tinha 75 anos. Seu nome real era Gaynor Hopkins, e outro dos seus grandes hits, além de It’s a Heartache, foi Total Eclipse of the Heart.
