Não é praxe iniciar um texto com um setlist, mas o fato é que não é praxe também ter que descrever a perda do visionarismo, da paixão e da capacidade de moldar canções de uma das mais impactantes vozes do jazz contemporâneo. Cassandra Wilson (1955-2026) morreu nesta quarta-feira, aos 70 anos, em Jackson, Mississippi, na mesma cidade onde nasceu.
Esse repertório acima foi o que ela cantou no Teatro Gran Rex, em Buenos Aires, no dia 20 de maio de 2009, quando estava a caminho de sua segunda visita ao Brasil – a primeira foi num rabo-de-foguete: ela veio também em 1994, substituindo Mel Tormé (que cancelara por causa de uma doença) em um festival. “Tem dois lugares na minha lista que sonho em conhecer no mundo: Salvador, no Brasil, e Havana, em Cuba. Salvador, me disseram que tem uma festa lá, de Iemanjá, que é muito linda”, ela contou.
Um dos nomes mais inovadores do jazz que se estruturou a partir dos anos 1980, ela surgiu em torno de um coletivo de jovens músicos afro-americanos que se formou no Brooklyn, em Nova York, capitaneado pelo saxofonista Steve Coleman. Era um movimento de ativismo de substrato filosófico. Apresentando-se quase sempre descalça no palco, Cassandra era capaz de cantar acompanhada apenas de um percussionista, tal a diversidade de recursos vocais e interpretativos que tinha.
A voz “enfumaçada” (como costumam definir), grave de veludo, a postura insolente, o olhar de mormaço e uma formação musical complexa rapidamente a tornaram uma rara unanimidade, bajulada pela crítica de jazz. Ela transformava em jazz tudo que tocava, embora também viesse imantada pelo funk sulista e pelo r&B. “A plateia nunca pergunta se o que estou cantando é jazz ou alguma outra coisa. Só querem algo que os emocione, apenas isso. Parte do trabalho de um músico é atualizar o passado, fazer novas leituras à luz de novos instrumentos e uma nova realidade. Isso é o jazz. É uma disciplina, algo que fazemos para comunicar com nossa música, abrir possibilidades. É mais um estilo do que uma forma. É um enfoque, uma maneira de compreender a música, que é contínua, não é estanque”.
Em 1995, Cassandra ganhou o primeiro Grammy, pelo disco New Moon Daughter. Os críticos a colocaram no ponto mais alto do jazz vocal. Em 2008, Loverly lhe valeu um novo Grammy, o de melhor cantora de jazz. Ela inaugurou uma postura de consciência racial em sua atuação que a distinguiu e influenciou fartamente jovens cantoras. Pela via da música, ensinava origem e destino. “É como um guia para entender a diáspora africana da música, porque toda música é relacionada. Essa bagagem traz a marca do que nós sofremos, às vezes, e também das nossas alegrias. Se a compreendemos melhor, podemos entender o que fomos antes. A fonte é comum”.
Adorava cantar Manhã de Carnaval (Black Orpheus), de Luiz Bonfá, e se esforçava para pronunciar o nome dele direitinho no palco. “Eu soube da música brasileira muito cedo em minha vida. Meu pai, que era músico, ouvia muito. Tinha discos de Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim. Eu adorei quando ouvi pela primeira vez aquele disco do João e da Astrud Gilberto com o Stan Getz. Compreendi a importância do samba bem cedo, e soa natural para mim cantar MPB. Não é um modismo. Mas não é música brasileira o que eu canto, eu sei disso. É uma combinação do som da música brasileira com peças do jazz tradicional”.
Ela tinha algumas marcas registradas. Não era aconselhável ficar filmando o show com o celular enquanto ela cantava, ela podia ralhar. “Para nós, que estamos no palco, o show é um ritual. A câmera incomoda, significa que aquela pessoa não está ali naquele momento. É algo rude, porque se você se dispõe a participar de um ritual, todo mundo deve estar ali. Gosto da tecnologia, acho que é imprescindível. Melhora o som, ajuda a que o show não tenha falhas. Mas há momentos em que ela não é necessária. Não quero a tecnologia na hora em que estou fazendo amor com meu marido. A imagem no YouTube substitui a experiência de ver o show com os próprios olhos e os sentidos?”.
É um choque perder Cassandra, porque sempre havia a esperança de vê-la cantando mais uma vez. Quando terminava um show de Cassandra Wilson, não era apenas mais um show que terminava: pairava ali depois uma espécie de brilho no ar, tipo reflexo de sol em água de cachoeira, um zumbido nos ouvidos, um cheiro de flor selvagem no ambiente. Era uma experiência singular.
