Corremos o risco, cada vez mais, de consolidar leituras ultrapassadas de livros feitos no passado, mas que deveriam permanecer vivos para os debates da atualidade. Vou contar um caso e explicar por quê.
Uma professora de literatura, Diva Calles, me mandou uma postagem de um canal com 215 mil seguidores, o Filosofia Aforismo, sobre uma das obras que eu mais prezo na literatura brasileira: O cortiço. O texto está cheio de marcações linguísticas que sugerem que ele foi escrito com o apoio de Inteligência Artificial.

Este é um ponto relevante, que deixarei por enquanto amortecido. Peço, leitor, no entanto, que registre essa observação, porque vou precisar esquecer dela por alguns parágrafos. Garanto que ao final volto a ela para uma conclusão talvez mais importante do que as discussões que farei até lá.

Não é raro que eu receba mensagens sobre o romance de Aluísio Azevedo, muitas vezes como alerta, outras como provocação. Afinal, desde 2003 eu venho me dedicando a pesquisar o movimento literário do qual O cortiço se tornou uma espécie de emblema, o naturalismo.
Dominante na literatura brasileira no último quarto do século 19 e fortemente presente ainda nas duas primeiras décadas do século 20, os livros naturalistas provavelmente podem ser contados na casa da centena no país.
O cortiço tornou-se uma espécie de símbolo único, eclipsando outras obras que construíram o cenário em que ele foi possível. Algumas do próprio Aluísio, outras de autores como Figueiredo Pimentel, Júlia Lopes de Almeida, Júlio Ribeiro, Adolfo Caminha (este, hoje em dia um pouco mais lembrado), Horácio de Carvalho, Valentim Magalhães etc.
Quando um livro se torna emblema, sua leitura deixa de ser simples. Todas as qualidades e fragilidades de seu tempo como que precisam ser encontradas nele – e, claro, acabam sendo, pois com uma lente de aumento, é talvez até impossível que a história do presente deixe de se apresentar em qualquer texto. De modo que, não raro, leio textos como o do Filosofia Aforismo, em que não posso discordar de tudo, mas que trazem alguns trechos me parecem absolutamente equivocados, exagerados ou simplesmente ultrapassados.
Neste exercício, vou transcrever o texto quase completo, com os trechos citados em itálico e meu comentário na sequência:
Existe um clássico brasileiro que cai em todo vestibular. Mas quase ninguém comenta a parte mais incômoda dele. O cortiço retrata seres humanos como se fossem animais. E o motivo disso esconde uma das ideias mais perigosas do século 19.
Aqui, eu concordo que O cortiço seja um clássico e que caia com frequência nos vestibulares. Mas não é verdade que a animalização seja uma presença raramente comentada. Não me lembro da ausência dessa informação na maior parte dos textos que li sobre O cortiço, muito menos nas obras de história literária, que exercem uma dupla função de síntese crítica e de manual de instrução para ler os autores de antanho.

Essa questão está tão presente na fortuna crítica que transborda para os materiais publicitários que tentam vender o romance. Veja o que diz um post recente da Editora Zahar sobre sua edição do livro: segundo o reclame, O cortiço “funciona como um campo de análise da sociedade a partir do meio, da hereditariedade e da biologia. Nesse sentido, se vale de artifícios como a zoomorfização dos personagens, recurso eficaz para exemplificar como os seres humanos podem ser guiados por instintos biológicos”. Os grifos são da editora.
Temos, portanto, na postagem do Filosofia Aforismo, uma informação equivocada, ancorada num lugar-comum, que cria uma espécie de teoria da conspiração. Para reforçar o clima de armação, é precisa haver um motivo para esconder algo “perigoso”. Pronto, criou-se um clima de suspeição não só do autor, mas de toda a crítica – que, ao contrário do insinuado, sempre fala do assunto.
O cortiço foi publicado em 1890. Aluísio Azevedo tinha 32 anos. O Brasil acabava de abolir a escravidão, em 1888. E de virar República, em 1889. Era um país em transformação. E Aluísio quis retratar, sem filtro, a vida nas camadas mais pobres do Rio de Janeiro.
Acima, temos muita informação factual. Nada está efetivamente errado e nem é especialmente problemático. O “sem filtro” talvez merecesse ser relativizado – afinal, o líder mundial da escola naturalista, Emile Zola, dizia que a arte era resultado da transposição da realidade a partir de um determinado ponto de vista. Mas vamos deixar passar.
A história se passa num cortiço. Tipo de habitação coletiva onde dezenas de famílias pobres dividiam espaços minúsculos. O livro acompanha a vida desses moradores. Lavadeiras, imigrantes, trabalhadores, ex-escravos. E o dono do cortiço, João Romão, que enriquece explorando a miséria de todos.
É uma boa sinopse, o problema vem a seguir.
À primeira vista, parece denúncia social. E em parte é. Aluísio mostra a exploração. A ganância. A desigualdade brutal. As condições desumanas em que viviam os mais pobres. Nesse sentido, o livro é um retrato corajoso do Brasil real da época, que poucos ousavam mostrar. Mas existe uma camada incômoda por baixo.
De novo, a sinopse expandida não está de todo errada. Mas a conspiração novamente se insinua: qual seria a camada incômoda por baixo?
Aluísio Azevedo era seguidor de uma corrente chamada Naturalismo. E o Naturalismo partia de uma ideia específica sobre os seres humanos. A de que somos determinados. Pelo ambiente. Pela raça. Pelos instintos. Quase como animais sem livre-arbítrio. Por isso o livro descreve as pessoas como bichos.
Os moradores do cortiço acordam e são comparados a um formigueiro. A um rebanho. A uma matilha. Aluísio descreve os impulsos deles como puramente animais. A obra trata os personagens, muitas vezes, como criaturas movidas só por instinto.
Aqui, temos uma simplificação bastante abusiva do que seria o naturalismo. A proposta de revelação, porém, cai por terra. O que o Filosofia Aforismo faz é, não mais, não menos, que reforçar justamente o estereótipo do naturalismo, aquilo que sempre lemos sobre ele.
Ao contrário do que afirma o perfil, o naturalismo não parte da ideia de que somos animais e atuamos apenas instintivamente, embora o instinto seja parte, sim, da humanidade. O determinismo, por sua vez, também não é tão simples assim.
O que o naturalismo acredita é que a realidade precisa ser estudada pelos artistas e escritores com método – método que é aprendido junto a cientistas, como os naturalistas (biólogos), médicos e psicólogos (que estudam um ser vivo em especial, os seres humanos), mas também com os cientistas sociais.
A partir desse estudo, é possível perceber recorrências e antever comportamentos para que as personagens criadas a partir da observação da realidade sejam coerentes, sejam verossimilhantes e digam algo sobre o mundo – e não apenas sobre o escritor e seus pensamentos íntimos.
Não só o Brasil passava por transformações radiciais, as ciências também estavam em plena ebulição, e é daí que vem o nome e a inspiração principal dos escritores naturalistas. Sigmund Freud está fundando a psicanálise, Emile Durkheim está fundando a sociologia, o positivismo de Comte é muito forte entre os militares brasileiros, mas já não fala sozinho quando o assunto é filosofia. O determinismo, neste contexto, é apenas uma das influências de Aluísio, não a única.
Quanto à animalização, ela é muito forte em O cortiço, inclusive na nomenclatura das personagens. Há, por exemplo, o uso de animais como moeda de troca para a obtenção de sexo – uma das personagens, Leocádia, dá um coelho ao rapaz, Henrique, que pretende seduzir para engravidar e poder viver como ama de leite.
Como na história resumida acima, é preciso estar sempre atento à dimensão simbólica das aproximações com a natureza. O coelho é símbolo da fertilidade, e portanto o presente não está escolhido ao acaso. Um dos personagens, Jerônimo, é ora descrito como um touro (quando a animalização está ligada à sexualidade), ora como um boi (quando sua força está relacionada ao trabalho). A animalização não é tão literal quanto normalmente nos é apresentada, ela é uma forma de narrar complexa, típica da época, mas nem sempre representa um rebaixamento.
E aqui mora a polêmica mais séria. Esse olhar determinista recai de forma especialmente dura sobre os personagens negros e mestiços. A obra associa, em várias passagens, a cor da pele a comportamentos. Sugere que a origem racial definiria o caráter, a sexualidade, o destino das pessoas.
Isso está equivocado. A animalização serve para todas as personagens. Jerônimo, que citei acima, é português. Léonie, a Leoa, é a prostituta francesa que seduz Pombinha, menina loira do cortiço que também irá se prostituir e, depois, iniciar sexualmente a filha de Jerônimo e Piedade (portugueses). A cor da pele pode ou não estar ligada à animalização, mas o fato é que ela é uma estrutura universal no romance, assim como é a presença da vida econômica.
A personagem Rita Baiana é o exemplo mais citado. Mulher mestiça, descrita com forte carga sensual. Apresentada quase como força da natureza, capaz de seduzir e dominar homens por puro instinto. A obra a reduz, em grande parte, a corpo e desejo. Um retrato que hoje reconhecemos como profundamente preconceituoso.
Sim, Rita Baiana é a mulher mais citada nas leitura de O cortiço, embora não seja a mulher mais presente no livro. A tradição crítica liga sua mestiçagem a um comportamento sexual ativo e independente, livre, capaz de tirar Jerônimo do rumo do trabalho ao seduzi-lo. Rita, como a grande maioria dos personagens de O cortiço, tem uma história econômica que a acompanha: é lavadeira, capaz de se sustentar e pagar seus caprichos. Tem vontade própria e, admirada pelos vizinhos, proclama, em dado momento:
— Casar? protestou a Rita. Nessa não cai a filha de meu pai! Casar? Livra! Para quê? para arranjar cativeiro? Um marido é pior que o diabo; pensa logo que a gente é escrava! Nada! qual! Deus te livre! Não há como viver cada um senhor e dono do que é seu!
A ideia de que o casamento limita a liberdade feminina aparece em muitas obras de Aluísio. A crítica à escravidão também. O fraseado de Rita sobre o casamento é semelhante ao presente em Filomena Borges, uma ideia que ganhará uma espécie de demonstração pelo absurdo em Livro de uma sogra.
Não se trata, portanto, de uma mulher simplesmente instintiva, mas alguém com capacidade de observar a realidade e apresentar um projeto consciente de vida em que a liberdade está em primeiro lugar. Aqui, faço uma provocação: esse feminismo (ou, vá lá, protofeminismo) de Rita Baiana seria instintivo? Não me parece.
E aí surge a pergunta difícil. Como ler hoje um clássico que carrega ideias racistas.
Vamos falar de racismo? Aqui, eu gostaria de apontar o racismo estrutural da crítica de O cortiço, que ignora, como também faz o perfil aqui analisado, a personagem Bertoleza.
Bertoleza é a protagonista do romance. Ela é mestiça, uma cafuza, descendente portanto de negros e indígenas – assim tratada logo no primeiro capítulo: “Ele propôs-lhe morarem juntos e ela concordou de braços abertos, feliz em meter-se de novo com um português, porque, como toda a cafuza, Bertoleza não queria sujeitar-se a negros e procurava instintivamente o homem numa raça superior à sua.”
Esse trecho é, indiscutivelmente, o mais marcado pelas hierarquias raciais de todo o romance, muito mais que os trechos que envolvem Rita Baiana (há outros, em que o discurso do narrador se associa a dimensões psicológicas dos personagens).
Sim, podemos, neste momento, falar em instinto, ainda que pudéssemos também, a partir do comportamento de Bertoleza ao longo do romance, encontrar outras condicionantes mais fortes que a questão racial e biológica.
Bertoleza é uma personagem movida pela vontade de acumular o dinheiro que necessita para a alforria e pela vontade de ascender pelo trabalho. Ela é, no entanto, uma escravizada (é propriedade de um cego morador de Juiz de Fora – a escolha desse personagem não me parece acidental também) e uma mulher, o que sugere fortes limitações numa sociedade escravista e patriarcal. Amigar-se a um português era uma estratégia bastante interessante para ela, ainda mais quando sabemos que João Romão a procura e a valoriza justamente por essa capacidade de trabalhar e de poupar.
Bertoleza, como, insisto, os demais personagens do romance, tem vida econômica. No caso dela, inicialmente, tão ou mais dinâmica que a de seu companheiro, João Romão.
Bertoleza, sim, é pouco lembrada pela crítica, apesar de sua força produtiva, de seu desejo de conquistar a liberdade e de sua recusa em aceitar o abandono que lhe propõe João Romão ao fim do romance. Ao descobrir que o parceiro se prepara para dela se livrar, afirma, de modo assertivo:
— Você está muito enganado, seu João, se cuida que se casa e me atira a toa! exclamou ela. Sou negra, sim, mas tenho sentimentos! Quem me comeu a carne tem de roer-me os ossos! Então há de uma criatura ver entrar ano e sair ano, a puxar pelo corpo todo o santo dia que Deus manda ao mundo, desde pela manhãzinha até pelas tantas da noite, para ao depois ser jogada no meio da rua, como galinha podre?! Não! Não há de ser assim, seu João!
O Filosofia Aforismo pergunta (sem usar ponto de interrogação, aliás, o que atrapalha a percepção da retórica utilizada), na sequência, sobre o romance:
Devemos cancelá-lo. Ignorá-lo. Ou estudá-lo justamente para entender de onde vêm certas visões que ainda ecoam na sociedade brasileira.
Eu, pessoalmente, diria que a frase de Bertoleza que destaquei é talvez uma das mais altivas manifestações de uma personagem negra num romance brasileiro. Bertoleza está muito além dos instintos neste momento: identifica o golpe, reage a ele, impõe suas condições. Não se parece em nada com aquela que buscava um homem de raça superior no início do romance.
O que Bertoleza não sabe é que João Romão recorreria à falsa alforria que lhe entregara no início da obra (o leitor sabe, desde então, de sua vilania) para se livrar dela. Bertoleza terá mais um momento de força para denunciar o racismo e o golpe que sofre de João Romão: “(…) quando você precisou de mim não lhe ficava mal servir-se de meu corpo e aguentar a sua casa com o meu trabalho! Então a negra servia pra um tudo; agora não presta pra mais nada, e atira-se com ela no monturo do cisco! Não! assim também Deus não manda! Pois se aos cães velhos não se enxotam, por que me hão de pôr fora desta casa, em que meti muito suor do meu rosto?”
Além de Bertoleza, há um segundo elemento que os críticos raramente discutem: a construção do capitalismo brasileiro presente na obra. João Romão e Bertoleza são dois agentes de modernização conservadora brasileira, associados.
Em determinado momento, João Romão abandona Bertoleza, pondo em evidência a falsidade de sua carta de alforria. É, portanto, sobre a herança dos escravizados que este capitalismo excludente se construirá: Aluísio responde, assim, já no século 19, a uma leitura histórica e sociológica construída a duras penas ao longo do século 20 (eu diria que, na sociologia, a obra encontra um paralelo fortíssimo com o livro A integração do negro na sociedade de classes, de Florestan Fernandes, de 1964).
O cortiço foi lançado no mês de maio de 1890, no segundo aniversário da Abolição assinada pela princesa Isabel. Ele pode ser lido, assim, como uma denúncia alegórica da falsidade do ato da “redentora”. Para vermos isso, temos de mergulhar na personagem Bertoleza. Ela, porém, frequenta muito menos as críticas feitas ao romance do que Rita Baiana – o que diz muito mais sobre os críticos do que sobre o livro.
Tudo isso mostra o potencial enorme que a obra de Aluísio Azevedo tem como literatura e como crítica social. Ao transformar o romance em, sobretudo, um documento do racismo científico, perdemos as sutilezas de uma obra sofisticada, ampla e fundada não apenas em conhecimentos hoje ultrapassados, mas também numa observação sensível do real.
Aluísio é um dos mais atentos observadores da sociedade brasileira do século XIX. Mas a leitura de manual de O cortiço (e de outras de suas obras, que são ainda menos estudadas) tende a apagar a força de um romance que caiu no gosto popular apesar das reticências de críticos conservadores (que costumam apontar os aspectos pornográficos do livro com um fator de censura) e dos progressistas que torcem muito rapidamente o nariz para os discursos científico e racista presentes na obra e acabam não vendo justamente os momentos em que os dois são colocados em xeque – às vezes, xeque-mate.
Pessoalmente, eu entendo que, no percurso do romance, o leitor vai, progressivamente, se identificando cada vez mais com Bertoleza, que se torna sua grande personagem, capaz de um gesto autodestrutivo, mas heroico, para evitar a reescravização.

Na minha avaliação, O cortiço cumpre, no cânone literário nacional, papel semelhante ao desempenhado por Germinal, de Emile Zola, no francês: é o romance com que os pobres e trabalhadores mais se identificam, aquele em que a dureza da vida é colocada à prova e gera solidariedade de classe.
Exagero? Recentemente, o operário Djalma Bom, um dos líderes das greves de 1979 e 1980 no ABC paulista, disse num depoimento no Instagram, colhido por José Igor Santos, que decidiu organizar o fundo de greve após a leitura do livro de Germinal, onde a prática era descrita – a tática grevista garantiu não apenas a sobrevivência de dezenas de milhares de famílias operárias brasileiras, mas também a construção de uma vasta aliança de classe pelo país. De alguma forma, podemos dizer que a existência do PT hoje deve um tanto à literatura naturalista, não por trazer ideias ultrapassadas de ciência, mas justamente por seu autor, a partir da observação meticulosa do real aprendida com o método científico, registrar num texto literário, que podia ser sentido e compreendido, conhecimentos e práticas da classe trabalhadora.

Embora eu tenha escrito sobre Bertoleza em O naturalismo e o naturalismo no Brasil, não estou sozinho na leitura da importância desta personagem. A companhia teatral Gargarejo Cia adaptou O cortiço e deu a sua adaptação de O cortiço o nome da personagem negra.
Quando eu assisti à montagem, aliás, excelente, comprei na saída do teatro uma camiseta com os nomes de Bertoleza, Dandara, Carolina (Maria de Jesus), Antonieta (de Barros) e Marielle, incluindo assim a personagem de Aluísio entre as heroínas negras brasileiras. Não é pouca coisa, né?

Sobre a questão da ciência, é preciso dizer que muitas vezes se atribui ao naturalismo “pecados” cometidos até décadas depois dele. A mesma propaganda da Zahar que citei lá em cima afirmava, no texto editado no Facebook, que, no romance, “é o ser humano, assim, produto do seu meio e da sua herança genética” – o termo gene só seria usado a partir de 1905, quinze anos após a publicação de O cortiço.

E onde entra a Inteligência Artificial, prometida no início deste texto?
A repetição sobre o caráter conservador do naturalismo é uma praga que dificulta sua leitura. Esse discurso foi reproduzido por décadas desde a publicação do romance, de modo que o corpus crítico sobre o romance, especialmente em obras de história da literatura e materiais de divulgação em livro e internet, é dominado por essa leitura.
Como a Inteligência Artificial nada cria, mas multiplica a facilidade de reproduzir as ideias já consagradas, corremos o risco de nos amarrarmos definitivamente a uma concepção ultrapassada de O cortiço, ignorando o trabalho de releitura feito nas últimas décadas por nomes como Antonio Candido, Leonardo Mendes, Pedro Paulo Catharina, Orna Levin, Angela Fanini (e o meu, Haroldo Ceravolo Sereza). E, mais recentemente, por um conjunto de pesquisadores (como Cláudia Barbieri, Thales Mendes e Cleyciara Camello, entre outros), que se interessam, cada vez mais, pela obra de Aluísio Azevedo, por diferentes motivos.
Os cards do Filosofia Aforismo têm padrões linguísticos que sugerem o uso de IA não apenas para a redação final do texto, como também para a pesquisa. Claro que é um trabalho de divulgação, e talvez não devêssemos esperar dele grandes novidades. O problema, no entanto, é que publicações semelhantes consolidam ainda mais lugares comuns que escondem a obra.
Assim sendo, só para quem chegou até aqui, peço que leiam “Quem me comeu a carne tem de roer-me os ossos – Aluísio Azevedo pela crítica contemporânea“. Lá algumas dessas questões e muitas outras sobre Aluísio estão presentes.
E, claro, que apoie Farofafá. Porque não é com texto de IA que se faz jornalismo cultural.
