Morreu nesta terça-feira no Rio de Janeiro, aos 86 anos, o cineasta, escritor, jornalista, roteirista, dramaturgo, educador e gestor cultural Orlando Senna, que foi Secretário do Audiovisual na gestão de Gilberto Gil no Ministério da Cultura e co-dirigiu (com Jorge Bodanzky), em 1974, um dos maiores clássicos do cinema brasileiro, Iracema, Uma Transa Amazônica – um dos 100 melhores filmes brasileiros de todos os tempos, segundo votação promovida pela Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Cinema (Abraccine). Foi um dos idealizadores da TV Brasil, hoje uma realidade da comunicação do Estado brasileiro.
Como gestor cultural, Orlando Senna celebrizou um aspecto incomum na figura de homem público: colocava a civilidade e a fraternidade à frente dos rituais de formalidade e impessoalidade. Era sempre, em primeira instância, um ponto de acolhimento e franqueza, antes mesmo de ser artífice das decisões de gabinete. Isso o distinguiu sempre. Outro aspecto de sua personalidade era a parceria siamesa com a mulher, a atriz, documentarista e professora baiana Conceição Senna, que estava no elenco de Iracema, seu filme mais famoso. O casal, formado na efervescência do teatro e do cinema baiano do final dos anos 1960, era um dos mais conhecidos e admirados nos bastidores do cinema brasileiro e viveu em Cuba, onde atuou na educação fílmica na Escola Internacional de Cinema e TV de San Antonio de los Baños, instituição criada pelo brasileiro, pelo colombiano Gabriel Garcia Márquez e pelo escritor, poeta e cineasta argentino Fernando Birri.
A morte de Conceição, em 2020, debilitou Orlando. Ele passou a viver com pouco gosto, demonstrando certa indiferença para com o mundo que os projetou e nos permitiu usufruir de sua produção mais fértil, inventiva e crítica. A tristeza se apossou do velho combatente do audiovisual. Logo depois da pandemia, desenvolveu sintomas de demência e experimentou um progressivo afastamento do mundo da cultura, mantendo pouco contato com os antigos companheiros.
Senna manteve uma folha corrida de serviços inestimáveis prestados ao cinema brasileiro. Na área criativa, assinou roteiros de produções como O Rei da Noite e Ópera do Malandro. Foi diretor do Centro de Dramaturgia do Instituto Dragão do Mar, em Fortaleza (CE), presidente da Televisión América Latina (Orlando sonhava com um sistema de integração audiovisual de todo o Cone Sul), diretor de programação da CineBrasilTV e integrante dos conselhos da Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano e da Spcine.
Iracema, Uma Transa Amazônica é um drama documental que combina realidade e ficção para narrar os impactos sociais e ambientais da construção da Rodovia Transamazônica. A história acompanha Iracema (Edna de Cássia), uma jovem de 15 anos que, ao chegar a Belém para o Círio de Nazaré, torna-se prostituta e passa a viajar com o caminhoneiro Tião Brasil Grande (Paulo César Pereio). Enquanto o caminhoneiro encarna a crença no progresso prometido pela ditadura militar, a jovem indígena representa a exclusão e a marginalização das populações originárias da época, em uma trama que denuncia as consequências da exploração na Amazônia. De forma ousada e pioneira, em pleno ambiente da repressão política. O filme ficou proibido no Brasil durante seis anos, até 1981. “Neste momento de tristeza, o Ministério da Cultura expressa sua solidariedade aos familiares, amigos, colegas de profissão e a todas as pessoas que foram inspiradas por sua obra, sua generosidade e sua dedicação à cultura brasileira”, assinalou nota do Ministério da Cultura distribuída essa noite. “É com imensa tristeza que perco hoje um grande companheiro”, escreveu Jorge Bodanzky. “Éramos jovens e realizamos juntos muitos trabalhos marcantes”.
