“Ele desapareceu, e eu espero que nunca mais volte. Espero mesmo que já esteja morto a essa altura”, declarou Raimundo Fagner sobre Antonio Carlos Belchior, em depoimento ao Museu da Imagem e do Som, em 2016.

“Eu não tinha muito contato com o Belchior. Éramos parceiros muito fiéis no começo da carreira, principalmente em Fortaleza, mas nosso contato nos últimos anos foi pouco”, afirmou Fagner em entrevista à Globo News em abril de 2017, no dia da morte de Belchior.

“Ele (Belchior) tinha um medozinho de mim. Sabia que meu sonho ia longe e começou a me podar”, disse Fagner à publicação Badalo, de Fortaleza, em 2019, ao lançar sua autobiografia Quem me levará sou eu.

É sempre importante, nesse mundo da pós-verdade (e às vezes da desinformação conveniente), recolocar em evidência a realidade e o apreço pela clareza antes de se iniciar qualquer abordagem pública de algo. Limpo a área logo de cara porque, a seguir, comentarei aqui o lançamento de Meu parceiro Belchior, o novo disco de Raimundo Fagner lançado há uma semana pela Universal Music.

Fagner nunca foi o intérprete mais importante de Belchior. Foram sim, parceiros, mas é uma parceria de alcance indeterminado. Fizeram juntos 9 das 220 composições registradas pelo bardo de Sobral, e apenas uma delas amplamente conhecida (Mucuripe). Somente com o piauiense Jorge Melo, por exemplo, Belchior fez mais de 30 canções. Em um único disco de Belchior, Elogio da Loucura, há quatro parcerias com o compositor Gracco. Músicas com autores como José Luiz Penna (Comentário a respeito de John), Gilberto Gil (Medo de Avião) e Toquinho (Pequeno Perfil de um Cidadão Comum) alcançaram mais repercussão pública do que quase todas as que Belchior fez com Fagner, e mesmo quanto ao clássico Mucuripe, será sempre controversa a qualidade da participação de Fagner em seu artesanato.

O disco Meu parceiro Belchior teria então essa possibilidade de colocar em relevo algumas canções menos conhecidas de Belchior com Fagner, dar-lhes nova vida, renová-las e repô-las em circulação. Sendo fiel ao título, entretanto, Fagner teria que fazer, simultaneamente, um disco capaz de evocar, ou ao menos sugerir, um pouco da maestria, espírito, solidez e transcendência da arte de Belchior. Nisso, Meu parceiro Belchior é uma sonora decepção.

A abertura, com A Palo Seco, expressa o desejo de demonstrar reverência. Fagner usa a segunda gravação original da canção (a primeira é do disco Mote e Glosa, de 1974, mas a música foi regravada em Alucinação, obra-prima de 1976), com a voz do próprio Belchior na primeira parte, para culminar em um mash-up reiterativo (com a guitarra mestra de Robertinho de Recife). Não que Fagner não possa reinterpretar o que lhe der na telha. O problema é que A Palo Seco nasceu de outro impulso – o nome significa “sem acompanhamento, desnudo, cru”. Um canto torto feito faca, como diz a letra. Aí Fagner lhe apõe uma guitarra barroca, um vocal triunfalista, um crescendo que passa a ocupar o lugar no qual Belchior deixara uma advertência seca, elegíaca, um violão emoldurado apenas pelo acordeon de Orlando Silveira. É como um caronista que acende um cigarro dentro do teu carro, e você não fuma.

Posto em Sossego, uma das parcerias da dupla resgatadas do limbo para serem reapresentadas ao público, sugere um esforço metalinguístico de Belchior para dizer algo decisivo a Fagner desde o Além: “Falo, e você não entende. Digo, e você não aprende”. A letra de Belchior poderia mesmo ser interpretada como um recado direto ao intérprete neoamigo: “Vou morrer sem saber disso. Meu amor, o que que é isso?”.

A voz de Belchior in natura volta a ser utilizada em Na Hora do Almoço (1971), a música que foi o abre-alas da carreira do cantor sobralense. Aí sim: o dueto em Na Hora do Almoço é algo que Fagner conhece exemplarmente: ele já a interpretou com o autor da canção em outras ocasiões. A primeira delas foi em 1972, um ano depois de Belchior ganhar o 4º Festival Universitário de Música Brasileira com a música, em sua primeira incursão em terras cariocas. Na ocasião (já como artistas convidados do festival, e não competidores), Fagner ficou ao fundo, acentuando, no contraponto, o parentesco rítmico de Na Hora do Almoço com Águas de Março, de Tom Jobim.

Mas, novamente, apesar do acerto do arranjo orientalizado no início, a nova versão aceleradinha de Fagner não faz pendant com o lamento de aboio de Belchior ao fundo (“Medo, medo, medo, medo, medo”). Pode chegar alguém que goste, porque é dessa amplidão de gostos que se forma a Terra Média, mas trata-se de um desperdício a guitarra de Robertinho do Recife nessa versão.

Galos, Noites e Quintais parece que vai dar um refresco nessa sanha nerviosa de Raimundo. Mais fiel à interpretação original, no início, finaliza seus dois tempos de um modo terrível, com uns riffs de rock extemporâneos e sem expressividade.

A seguir, vem a segunda das duas composições desconhecidíssimas da dupla no álbum: Alazão (que é de Belchior, Fausto Nilo e Fagner). A letra tem pedigree, o alto grau de refinamento poético de Belchior está evidentemente ali, assim como o de Fausto Nilo. A parte musical, entretanto, carece de originalidade, muitas vezes parece cópia de algum hit de Vinicius Cantuária dos anos 1980 (Só Você, por exemplo).

Moto I, uma das canções mais bonitas de Manera Fru Fru Manera (disco de estreia de Fagner, de 1973), ressurge sem a escora do piano, despida da psicodelia original (esse condimento reaparece apenas num sample da gravação dos anos 1970). Com boa vontade, ouve-se mais proximidade com a gravação original, que é sem dúvida a parceria mais forte de Fagner e Belchior depois de Mucuripe.

Bolero em Português é dominada pela voz poderosa de Amelinha, com Fagner atuando mais como um convidado de si mesmo. Curtinha, é uma canção do início dos anos 1970, quando Fagner e Belchior ainda se davam razoavelmente bem, e teria sido dedicada a Angela Maria (1929–2018), portanto todo o excesso sentimental se justifica. Ney Marques toca violão e Robertinho do Recife toca viola de 12 cordas na faixa.

A diva Amelinha abre caminho para a mais bem resolvida do disco, Contra-mão (de 1985), um interessante dueto vocal com Roberto Frejat. A puxada bluesy de Frejat impulsiona a simplicidade das metáforas semafóricas de Belchior na letra, que deita preguiçosamente nos teclados de Humberto Barros e na batida da bateria de Marcelo Costa (bateria e percussão).

Paralelas é uma gravação recuperada de um show ao vivo, e o público canta quase 20% do tempo. Fagner faz um nhénhénhénhé bizarro no final e agradece à plateia dizendo “Parceiro Bel! Gente, boa noite!”. É interessante o registro, mas passa quase nenhuma intensidade emocional. O disco então emenda Mucuripe, também ao vivo, aparentemente extraída do mesmo show. Parece meio preguiçoso o recurso, ou revela receio de encarar agora, com as armas do agora, duas canções tão potentes.

Daí vem a inexplicável versão tecnoforró de Noves Fora (gravada em levada de samba em 1972 por Wilson Simonal, e por Elis Regina em 1979 também como um samba). Fagner convidou Xand Avião (e os músicos Emanuel Dias, teclados e percussão, e Nonato Dias, sanfona) para talvez faturar um ou dois tostões de pisadinha em festa junina. É fato que Belchior também adorava os gêneros periféricos, gravou brega e tudo o mais. A diferença é que ele fazia tudo buscando ampliar o léxico das formas consagradas, e Fagner apenas pega mais uma carona no êxito de um astro popular.

Romanza, que fecha o disco, é uma versão de assustadora diluição em relação à original gravada por Fagner em 1977, no discaço Orós. É como se o próprio intérprete não compreendesse mais aquilo que cantava com tanta alma e propriedade há 45 anos (“Conheço a morte e a paixão”), sob uma percussão de feiticeiro de aldeia, pífanos em decomposição. Ouvindo-a agora, nessa versão de 2022, só falta imaginar os instrumentistas indo à frente para fazer coreografia de dois pra cá, dois pra lá, como uma banda poser buscando animar o gargarejo.

Em entrevistas recentes, Fagner tenta passar a ideia de que, subitamente, se deu conta da excelência de Belchior. Na verdade, quem redescobriu a excelência de Belchior foi o Brasil, que o reinseriu na ordem do dia, nos muros, nas camisetas, nas tatuagens, nos memes, na sabedoria popular. Belchior agora é cultuado, idolatrado, reverenciado. E vende muito. Seria lamentável que tivesse sido esse último aspecto a determinar essa “reconciliação” entre dois antigos parceiros em disco.
