Colados em Raull Santiago, Heriberto Paredes e Teresita Gavíria, três ativistas que ousaram desafiar e enfrentar a violência em seus países, a obra aborda a brutalidade que une polícias e criminosos no Brasil (Rio de Janeiro), México (Michoacán) e Colômbia (Medellín), respectivamente.
Milhares de mães perderam filhos para o narcotráfico nos dois últimos. A polícia brasileira é a mais letal do mundo, matando uma média de 16 pessoas por dia, em geral com a desculpa da guerra às drogas, tão cruel quanto ineficiente: as estatísticas têm cor, faixa etária e endereço: negros, jovens, moradores de favelas e periferias.
Da organização de grupos paramilitares para a defesa de seus próprios territórios no México, passando por mães que perderam filhos e resolveram ajudar outras que passaram pelo mesmo infortúnio, à consciência de classe e do poder das novas mídias para revelar situações de abuso de autoridade e violações de direitos humanos, com vistas a contê-las, o filme toca em temas sensíveis, de maneira crua.
Filmado em 2017, é impossível não destacar a atualidade do filme e, de algum modo, seu vaticínio: à época, Jair Bolsonaro não passava de piada de mau gosto e, uma vez convertido em presidente da república, sua gestão é uma coleção de irresponsabilidades, como a gestão da pandemia de covid-19 e o afrouxamento das legislações sobre posse e porte de armas – o que até as pedras sabem, só contribui para o aumento das violências retratadas pelo filme.
“América armada” levou os troféus de melhor filme (júri popular) e melhor roteiro no 42º. Festival Guarnicê de Cinema (realizado pelo Departamento de Assuntos Culturais da Universidade Federal do Maranhão), entre outros festivais de que participou, mundo afora, e estreia dia 11 de março nas plataformas de streaming e dia 25 de abril na Globo News, coprodutora do filme.
